High-Quality Education Options
Good schools are important to all homeowners – regardless whether they have school age children or not. Think about it, good schools drive much of the value of homes in a community. You want your home investment to be solid. One of the most critical location factors is the school system. Don’t ever discount the value of good schools to your best interest.
School District Boundaries
In the Houston area, almost all school districts are considered “independent”. These districts are called by the district name followed by the letters “ISD” standing for Independent School District. (Ex: Houston ISD, Ft Bend ISD, Conroe ISD, etc.) This term refers to the school district not being under direct control of other local government entities.
The ISD system also means school district boundaries do not follow strict city or county boundaries. Boundaries can often be confusing to newcomers, so check carefully before assuming the school falls into a specific school district. There is a school zone finder tool provided by the Houston Association of Realtors. This tool will allow you to email or call the school and research school details. You will find details including individual school campus information, telephone numbers and ratings. Call us for more information about schools in our area.
Schools budgets and tax rates are set by an elected school board. The State of Texas has authority to regulate the actions of an ISD. Tax rates vary greatly from one school district to another.
There is one area school district not part of an ISD. At one time the Stafford district was part of Ft Bend ISD. The city limits of Stafford are now the boundaries of a Municipal School District (MSD #50) which share facilities like an auditorium and recreational features.
Private and Parochial Schools
The Greater Houston area has more than 300 private or parochial schools. Their focus ranges from early childhood education, K-12 schools, boys schools, girls schools, religiously affiliated schools and schools with special programs.
As you know, all children are not alike. The diverse offerings of private/parochial options allow you to select a education program that’s right for your kid’s talents and goals. The Houston Area Independent Schools website offers information about more than 85 of the private options for education.
